1. Continue reading this semester's core literature. 2. Cite two more examples of allusion and state their significance. 3. Comment on a classmate's post.
Allusion: Faber said, “Do you know the legend of Hercules and Antaeus, the giant wrestler, whose strength was incredible so long as he stood firmly on the earth?” (Pg.83) This statement is referring to the Greek myth of Hercules and Antaeus. Hercules defeated the mighty Antaeus by lifting him off of the ground. I believe this allusion shows that Faber believes that if people are continually lifted from factual information, they will always be defeated.
Allusion: “Winston Noble and Hubert Hoag” (Pg.96-97) These two fictional characters can possibly be referring to Winston Churchill and Hubert Humphrey, both who were involved in politics. Based on Bradbury’s description of the two people, I believe he is emphasizing the fact that decisions are based solely on outer appearance rather than realistic details. I think Bradbury is stating the fact that if information is censored, the public will have no choice but to base their positions according to opinions rather than facts.
“I’ve got to go see my psychiatrist now.” (Pg. 22) The significance is that this is alluding to the fact that she is unstable and has some problems.
“Beatty rubbed his chin. ‘A man named Latimer said that to a man named Nicholas Ridley, as they were being burnt alive at Oxford, for heresy, on October 16, 1555.” (Pg. 40) The significance is that Captain Beatty knows a lot about history.
dmkddfun ~ Again your examples were very well written. I agree with your statement that if information is censored, then the public will want to base their positions on opinions rather than facts.

Examples of allusion-
Referring to a historical event but talking about a current event.
Referring to strength someone has and comparing that to the strength of Goliath from history.

Allusion: (Pg.144) "The green bullet in which Faber's voice whispered and cried fell to the side walk."
Allusion: (Pg.147) "...a shower of silver needles gushed up the length of the calf..."
